Our Story

Hi, I’m Maureen Nixon, co-owner of Clean Slate Homebuyer. My partner in this journey is my niece, Kaitlyn Nichol, and together we’ve built a business that we’re incredibly proud of. But our story starts in a very unconventional way.

Nearly six years ago, my husband had a dream of getting into real estate. At first, I thought he was crazy—neither of us had any experience buying homes or doing rehabs. For months, he talked about it, and we kept brushing it off. But during this time, we had an incredibly important person in our life receive a devastating diagnosis. Without going into details, it made us quickly realize that we’re not promised anything in life. If there’s something we want to do, we should go for it with our whole heart.

So, we decided to take a leap of faith. We bought our first house, and our entire family rallied around us to help with the rehab. It was an unforgettable experience, especially for our kids, and it marked the beginning of our journey into real estate. After that first house, we never looked back.

As the years went on, we continued to learn and grow in the business. But during the COVID-19 pandemic, we began to notice something that hit close to home. Homeowners—many of them facing financial difficulties—were being given foreclosure notices without warning. One particular case stands out: we worked with Mary, a single mother who had been told by her bank that she could pause her mortgage payments. Like many others, she thought that the bank would let her know when it was time to resume payments. Instead, she received a 21-day foreclosure notice.

That’s when we stepped in. We were able to give Mary more time and helped her navigate the process. Ultimately, she was able to sell her house on the market, avoiding foreclosure and preserving her credit. This experience reinforced our commitment to helping homeowners like Mary—not just with buying houses, but with providing the support and information they need to make the best decisions for their future.

At Clean Slate Homebuyer, our goal is to give homeowners peace of mind during difficult times. Whether you’re facing foreclosure, dealing with an unexpected life change, or simply looking for a fresh start, we’re here to help. We take pride in offering a compassionate, straightforward approach to real estate—because we believe that every homeowner deserves a second chance.

About Clean Slate Homebuyer

Clean Slate is a family-owned business that started in 2019. The funny thing is, it took us four and a half years to come up with our name. We are a small family business, and very rarely do we say our company name out loud. For years, we experimented with different names—using our surname, first names, and more—but nothing felt quite right. We knew that the name of our company would be the first impression we made on others.

For a long time, we felt that all the names we came up with weren’t good enough. However, after working in this field for a few years and seeing the impact we had in helping people save their homes or start fresh, the right name came to us clearly. One of us said it, and we both looked at each other and knew immediately: “That’s our name! We can finally have a website!”

We work with homeowners facing a variety of challenges, such as foreclosure, bankruptcy, probate, and other complicated situations. We are skilled at navigating these issues and are always happy to provide owners with as much information as possible. We want them to have all the facts so they can make the most informed decision based on their unique situation.
Whether homeowners want to save their home or sell it, we are here to help. If we’re not the right fit for a situation, we’ll be the first to let you know. Our goal is always to ensure that you have a plan that works best for you. We tailor every solution to each homeowner’s specific circumstances. We truly believe that no house or set of circumstances is the same.
